How to Use Exogenous Ketones
TIPS ON USING YOUR IGNITE KETO BHB EXOGENOUS KETONES
Exogenous ketones are becoming increasingly more popular as a nutritional supplement because of the fuel they supply our bodies with and how they positively affect other functions of the body. BHB isn’t necessarily a ketone. However, it still functions like one and still converts into energy as the other ketones do. BHB, or Beta-hydroxybutyric acid, is the main source of exogenous ketone bodies that supplements rely on.
If you want to harness the power and benefits of ketones to help you lose weight, then that’s great! But you should also remember that using exogenous ketones to help with losing weight should also be combined with a low-carb diet, and some exercise to help push your weight loss goals.
Common Misconceptions About Exogenous Ketones and Weight Loss
Before we get to how to use exogenous ketones, we should first dispel a few common misconceptions pertaining to the types of ketones.
- Taking exogenous ketone supplements will cause quick and accelerated weight loss. As already mentioned, ketones are not a miracle fix for weight loss. It must be combined with a healthy lifestyle such as a low-carb diet and regular exercise.
- The more exogenous ketone supplements you use, the greater the weight loss you will experience. Again, this is simply not true. As with any other kind of supplement you may take, the benefits are often limited once the typical saturation has been reached; meaning no greater weight loss can be achieved by taking more than needed to achieve ketosis.
- If I use exogenous ketone supplements, then I can still eat whatever I want and lose the weight I want to lose. No. If you choose to consume a meal that is heavy in carbs, you will still need to burn all the extra glucose. However, ketones can help you get back into ketosis after consuming a carb-heavy meal.
Drink Plenty of Water
Beginning a ketogenic diet causes your insulin levels to drop, triggering the kidneys to release more water and electrolytes. It's important to drink plenty of water and electrolytes to replace this loss and prevent dehydration. Always take exogenous ketones with at least 10 ounces of water or another non-caffeinated liquid and drink plenty of water throughout the day.
One benefit of exogenous ketones supplements is that they provide electrolytes. This can also help with the keto flu, mentioned below.
Change up the Flavor
BHB Salts can sometimes taste downright terrible, but we think we’ve done a great job using natural flavors and real ingredients to make them refreshing and delicious. If you purchased Citrus Splash, try less water for a tangy grapefruit flavor or more water for an orange mango flavor; you can also add to sparkling flavored water.
If you purchased Caffe Mocha, try mixing in water, unsweetened almond milk, or coffee. If you purchased Wild Berry, try it in sparkling water for a refreshing sugar-free spritzer. If there is a slight amount of powder in the bottom of your glass after mixing, this is completely normal as we don’t use any binders or fillers.

To Avoid the “Keto Flu”
Just getting started with keto and having trouble getting into ketosis? Suffering from low energy, headaches, or bloating? Your body is probably transitioning from burning carbs as its primary source of fuel to burning fat for fuel and needs a little help to make the transition easier. This is often referred to as the Keto Flu.
While your body is getting used to producing and burning natural ketones, we suggest starting with one-third to one-half of a full scoop taken throughout the day to help boost energy, decrease cravings, and minimize symptoms of the Keto Flu.
Also, drink plenty of water and continue to keep your fat intake up and your carb intake down. As well, focus on the quality not just the quantity or macros of the food you eat. Remember, micronutrients can be just as important as macronutrients.
To Increase Fat Burning
Taking exogenous ketones triggers your body to use ketones for fuel. When coupled with a ketogenic diet, once your body burns through the exogenous ketones, your body will begin looking for other sources of ketones. From where? Yep, you guessed it, from fat stores!
Exogenous ketones provide a zero carb and clean source of fuel for your body, so you can cut down on cravings and boost energy when transitioning or maintaining a ketogenic diet.
Ketones can also help you train longer and harder than you typically would because of the energy reserves ketones provide.
Start out with a one-half scoop in between meals up to twice a day to assess tolerance and then increase to one scoop up to three times per day. Note that ketones are caloric and are real energy - not a stimulant. This means they add a very minimal number of calories to your daily intake (about 20-30 calories per serving). Use them as you would any other external fuel source and to help shift your body into ketosis when transitioning from a high carb to a low carb keto diet.
When I'm looking to lose body fat I use exogenous ketones to help me cut out cravings, boost energy levels, and keep my overall calorie count in line with my goals.
To Boost Mental Productivity
Ketones readily cross the blood-brain barrier and provide instant fuel to your brain without any additional processing needed. To boost energy and increase mental productivity, start out with one-half to one scoop on an empty stomach in the morning. I like to take exogenous ketones in the morning as a replacement for coffee or in the afternoon to help me power through the day.
The brain happens to use a lot more energy than the rest of our body does, so it is important to have a supplement that can help clear away any brain fog we may be experiencing. Ketones can effectively boost and improve our memory and our overall cognitive function and performance.
Just note that if this is your first time taking exogenous ketones it can sometimes take your body a little while to get used to using ketones for fuel - just give it a few days to fully take effect if you don't immediately notice the calm and focused energy that ketones provide.
The Bottom Line
If you are looking for a supplement that can enhance your overall athletic performance, boost your cognitive abilities, help you lose weight, help curb any cravings, and provide you with a boost of energy and awesome fuel source you desperately need to get through your day, then exogenous ketones, when taken responsibly, can definitely help.
To experience the full benefits these supplements have to offer, you should also follow a low-carbohydrate diet and exercise regularly to help improve the effects. Ketones on their own will not yield the positive and dramatic results you may be looking to achieve. They are merely one tool in your bag of many to help you on your journey.
